from B.J. Huchtemann, Thursday, July 31:

Jon Dee Graham, who performed at Dean's and Gary's Sunday Roadhouse Concert Series at Mick's on Sunday, July 20, is expected to make a full recovery after a recent car accident. Graham was in ICU in Austin after undergoing an emergency spleenectomy on Monday, July 28. His injuries were the result of a late night/early morning accident in the early hours of Saturday, July 26, as he returned home to Austin from a Friday night solo gig in Dallas. After two trips to ICU, which included recovery from an emergency surgery, a full recover is currently expected.

Graham's friend and former bandmate in the Skunks, Jesse Sublett, was quoted by Austin360.com reporters as saying, "He looks good. He needs a shave. He's definitely on the mend...Big scar like a zipper, but he's good!" - Jesse Sublett

The Graham family's original report of Jon Dee's accident, injuries and further updates on Graham's condition are being posted by his family at

Graham's regular Wednesday night gig at Austin's legendary Continental Club on Wednesday, July 30, turned into an impromptu benefit for costs not covered by the Graham's insurance and became an outpouring of love for Graham.
Reporter Michael Corcoran reported on the July 30 Continental Club show in an online blog letter to Jon Dee at
austin360.com/blogs/content/shared-gen/blogs/austin/music/entries/2008/07/31/a_dear_jon_dee_letter.html
In part he wrote
"I know things are hard physically for you, still hospitalized after your car accident Friday night, but you should know that the love poured freely Wednesday night- your night- at the Continental Club....It was a benefit without buildup, the way you would've liked it. The night was an eloquent, yet totally unpretentious, expression of what Austin is, when Austin is right. Get well soon, brother."

The AustinChronicle.com and it's Earache daily blog reported the following update on Graham's condition. A full recovery is expected.

"Jon Dee Graham underwent emergency surgery at the University Medical Center at Brackenridge to remove his ruptured spleen on Monday evening, after being involved in a single-car accident late Friday night. The treasured Austin singer-songwriter fell asleep at the wheel and struck a concrete embankment. He suffered two broken ribs, cracked vertebrae, and a concussion. He is currently recovering in ICU, but is expected to make a full recovery. Thanks to an abundance of calls and well-wishes from fans and friends alike, Graham has been taken off of the hospital's public contact list, and his family asks that the public respect his need for peace and quiet at this time. Updates on his condition are being posted at his myspace."

While the Grahams have medical insurance, there will be 10's of thousands of dollars of medical bills not covered. To help out, The Continental Club hosted a spur of the moment benefit for Jon Dee, which was a huge success. Benefit organizers Michael Lahrman andDustin Welch (who was already booked for the closing set last night), along with South Austin Jug Band (who were Jon Dee's short-notice replacements), turned over the door money to help JDG & his family. Along with a donation jar at the front door and an additional donation from Continental Club head honcho, Steve Wertheimer, there was a total of $2000.00 raised.
