Default Today's Blues you can use.

Thursday, August 06, 2009

Greetings Blues Fans,

Free Family Fest was a great success. Thanks to everyone, especially the Cowger Clan, that made it all happen. It was the first time a lot of people had seen the BluesEd bands perform. Opened some eyes, for sure.

We had so many great tickets left-over, we are going to hold another raffle at Murphy’s tonight, and I like your chances much better than at Anchor Inn.

Thanks to Harrah’s Casino, we have 2 tickets to see Johnny Lang and George Thorogood on Sat 8/22 and 8 to see Little Feat on Sat. 9/1 at Whiskey Roadhouse. I will be donating tickets to Randy McAllister/Yo Mama’s Big Fat Booty double-bill on 8/20, plus tickets to Walter Trout and Buckwheat Zydeco. Plus more great prizes! You can help the scene while possibly winning great free stuff if you buy raffle tickets tonight at Murphy’s.

SPECIAL TICKET OFFER
Lynyrd Skynyrd with Special Guest Bo Bice IAugust 13 at Mid-America Center !
You can Save $10 on tickets to the Lynyrd Skynyrd show at the MAC! This offer is valid through Wednesday, August 12 at 10 p.m. http://www.ticketmaster.com/event/060042B2ACCE810E

Don't miss Lynyrd Skynyrd's live show! They are full of power and grace and simply everything great a Southern rock show could be. Best known for the classic-rock anthem "Free Bird," other popular hits include "Tuesday's Gone," "Gimme Three Steps" and " Sweet Home Alabama ." Despite the high mileage, Skynyrd sounds fresh and renewed while still staying true to their roots. Not just going through the motions, they nail the material and play with passion and conviction-- all while looking like they were having the time of their lives. The band's recent induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is another accolade to the band's success.

Zoo Bar writes: Thursday night, we will be having a
benefit for the family of the late Nick Holt, this
will feature the Blues messengers, Blues from the
Five, and Magic Slim, it all begins at 6pm. On
Friday Charlie Burton has the FAC, while Levi
William plays that night. On Saturday night the
Chicago Afro-Beat Project takes the stage. Sunday
begins with our wine tasting, followed by an art
show featuring our own Hannah Voelkers coaster
workings.
Hope to see you soon, The Zoo Bar

RIP: Billy Lee Riley
The Memphis Commercial Appeal wrote in an obit yesterday. "Riley is considered by many to be Sun Records' lost giant. A true multi-threat, he possessed the myriad musical gifts of Carl Perkins, the unhinged spirit of Jerry Lee Lewis, and the punkish insouciance of Elvis Presley --yet fate never rewarded Riley beyond cult acclaim."

Billy Lee Riley was very entertaining at an Indigenous Jam a few years back.

Lil’ Brian Terry & The Zydeco Travelers play at 9:30pm at Murphy’s tonight. This super-hip Zydeco Band does a great job of filling dance floors with their Z-Funk! Chicago ’s Lubriphonic will bring their horn-driven Blues and Funk to Murphy’s stage for the 5:30pm show prior to Lil’ Brian’s show. Dare I say best double-bill ever???

Tonight, TH 8/6 The Zoo Bar is planning a benefit for the family of Nick Holt, long-time bass player in Magic Slim’s Teardrops.

Despite what you may have read elsewhere, it does not appear Ivan Neville’s Dumstaphunk is playing Lincoln on Friday. Too bad, great band.

Blues Cruises 51 and 52 are Friday, August 7th, with International Blues Star Larry McCray headlining.
This is my kind of blues: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SBBY1aysmtg

On the lower deck, we are going to present an acoustic showcase featuring Kris Lager, Matt Cox, Stephen Monroe, and one more artist tba.

As mentioned previously, we are only selling 100 tickets to these cruises, to ensure that a good time is had by all. The 8pm Cruise has sold out, and only 8 tickets for the 10pm Cruise remain at Murphy’s. I know BarFly is sold out of both cruises, but McKenna’s might have tickets. Cruise #51 boards at 7:30pm and cruises 8pm-9:30pm. Cruise #52 boards at 9:30pm and cruises 10pm-11:30pm.

Indigenous Jam returns on Saturday, August 8th to Legacy Amphitheater (just south of 169th & W. Center Rd. ). Rick Galusha has put together another great line-up with Indigenous, Guy Davis, Matt Woods & The Thunderbolts, and Big Wheel. Tickets are available for $16 in advance ($20 d.o.s.) at Murphy’s, BarFly, Homer’s, and online at etix.com. I’m especially looking forward to the acoustic blues of Guy Davis: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hr2zpdyrfoc&feature=related
