| Fri. 4/17/2009 Greetings Blues Fans, We are now over 302 friends on BSO’s Facebook group!!! Follow the link below if you want to join our BSO Facebook group: http://www.facebook.com/n/?group.php&gid=54757108012 If you already joined, please consider using the “Invite Friends” feature to expand our reach! Let’s start with the corrections of last weeks email. I am glad these two events are a ways off, and I am glad some of you are reading these close enough to catch the errors. My brother Dan, who has been to this festival and says it is extremely well-run, (short lines to the beer and food), corrected me on the locale. It is in Yankton Trail Park in Sioux Falls , SD , not in Yankton, SD: Sioux Falls JazzFest in Yankton:July 17 & 18: Keb Mo , Elvin Bishop, Bettye LaVette, Tommy Castro. http://www.jazzfestsiouxfalls.com/ Tommy Castro performs at Playing with Fire on 7/18, and Betty LaVette does PWF on 9/12. Mark your calendars. Last week I wrote “The first PWF is 6/13 with Angel Forest and Trampled Under Foot”, but that is actually the 2nd PWF of 2009. I was corrected by PWF Vol coordinator, Vanessa Bauer, that the first PWF is actually less than a month away: Sat 5/16 featuring Gaetano Pellino, Ronnie Baker Brooks, Burgundy and Gray, and The Blues Explosion. If you are interested in volunteering for PWF, or any other BSO Event, such as the Free Family Fest at Anchor Inn on Sunday, August 2nd, send Vanessa an email atBSOVolunteers@cox.net. We’d love to have some new vols! There was a nice article in the OWH yesterday on PWF: http://omaha.com/index.php?u_page=2620&u_sid=10611010 The following is for a benefit being held for Brad Cordle in Las Vegas . (There is an address below, if you want to send a check, or I am going to pass a hat for Brad this Sunday and next Thursday at Murphy’s, if you want to donate then.) Benefit for Brad Cordle Many of you have seen Brad and enjoyed his incredible performances, but many do not know that he is in the final stage of Diabetic Retinopathy, a condition that would leave him blind. The only treatment that will stop the further deterioration of his eyesight is a series of surgeries. King Tut's Pub, Live Music for Live People, and The Las Vegas Blues Society are sponsoring a benefit to help with his overwhelming medical bills. Not only do we need you there, we need your help. Contributions can be dropped off at: King Tut's Pub, 6138 W. Charleston, or mailed to: The Las Vegas Blues Society, PO Box 371077, Las Vegas, NV 89137. If you would like to make a contribution, and would like a charitable donation receipt for tax purposes, please make your check out to "The Las Vegas Blues Society," put "Brad Cordle" on the memo line, and he will get 100% of your contribution. We also need items for the raffle. Popular raffle items are gift certificates to restaurants, shows, spas, various types of lessons and services. Do you or a friend have a business that needs some publicity? This is a great way to get exposure. We all thank you for your help. See you on the 25th! While it is really sad that Brad is having more health issues, it is pretty cool that he has friends in Vegas that care enough about him to put on a benefit. Earth Day is postponed! Due to expected rain, Earth Day Omaha has been postponed until next Saturday, April 25. Same time, same place, same fun! Saturday, April 25, 2009 | Elmwood Park | 808 S. 60th St , Here is a perfect rainy day adventure: Record Store Day is still happening, Saturday, April 18, 2009. Go buy a CD at a locally owned record store. You will be helping the local economy and won’t it be fab to buy a new CDJ This site is pretty inspiring: http://www.recordstoreday.com/Home If anybody collects vinyl: CELEBRATE RECORD STORE DAY WITH A BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN SINGLE Columbia Records has produced a 7" vinyl single, with collectible photo insert, available only on Record Store Day: Side A: "What Love Can Do" from Working On A Dream Side B: "A Night With The Jersey Devil" Lincoln Blues Fanatic Conrad Goode forwarded this great video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6I3QZIM7dNk This might be a sign of the times: Tickets to see Fleetwood Mac at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis on Tuesday, May 5 have been cut to just $47. Flights are about $100 RT. St. Louis has great Blues bars within two blocks of the stadium, BTW. Catch The Barkin’ Irons tonight (Friday) at Downtown Blues. They are definitely one of Omaha ’s best Blues acts, but due to conflicts with other projects, don’t play a lot of shows. Hear them here and you will go see them there: http://www.myspace.com/thebarkinirons Saturday...Little Joe and Big Trouble featuring Steve George (Iowa Blues Hall of Famer)... at the Saddlecreek Bar from 9-1 Heartland Café in downtown Elkhorn 113th N. Dean and Gary ’s Sunday Roadhouse returns to Murphy’s Lounge Sunday at 5pm for singer/guitarist/actor James Intveld. Intveld played guitar with The Blasters and did the singing for Johnny Depp in the major motion picture Cry Baby, yet is a star in his own right. Of a previous James Intveld release, a Billboard reviewer said, "As they say, nobody does it better than James Intveld; in a perfect world where music and musicians are rewarded for talent, ability, and original creativity, the enticing Mr. Intveld would be constantly sitting at number one on all the music charts and this CD would be double or triple platinum at least." Here is a cool video of Intveld playing acoustic guitar w/ Brian Setzer:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ny5CMpmkfWc&feature=related There are a ton of great Intveld videos linked there as well. Storm Rhodes, former guitarist with Ivory Star and Tres Equis, now plays guitar with Intveld. He is a monster, yet a heck of a nice guy. Tix are $13 in advance, and $15 day of show. Tix available at Murphy’s or can be purchased here: http://www.sundayroadhouse.com/tickets.htm Local Rockabilly cats, The Filter Kings, are going to play a set right after Intveld finishes up, probably around 8:30pm. Admission will be free after 7:30pm. International Reggae Star Pato Banton brings his 9 piece band to the Zoo Bar on Saturday, and BarFly on Sunday. Ashanti opens the show in Lincoln . Cornerstone Dub opens the show at 8pm at BarFly, followed by The Irietions from KCMO. Tickets are $12. One of my top five current Blues artists play The Zoo Bar next Wed 4/22 at 6pm: John Nemeth. If you don’t dig John Nemeth, y’all got a hole in your soul, as they say. Stacy Mitchhart makes his Omaha debut next TH at Murphy’s Matinee. He has won “Best Blues Band” in Nashville several times, and more importantly, BluesEd founder Doug Backer highly recommends Stacy Mitchhart. Cover charge just $8. Local Rockabilly Vets, The Mercurys, have the 9:30pm slot. Attention Lincoln-area Blues fans: Go see Matt Cox Band next TH at The Zoo Bar. Hear him here, see him there: http://www.myspace.com/crookedroadblues If you appreciate the time I spend sending these emails, I would appreciate it if you would NOT ask me to spend more of my time “Subscribing”, or “Unsubscribing” you. If you want to subscribe, or unsubscribe, to this FREE weekly Blues e-mail, follow this link to the Blues Society of Omaha's website and follow the simple prompts: http://omahablues.com/index.php?page=mailinglist (Sorry if that sounds bitchy. I hate how much time I spend on the internet). (That is where the calendar following this email can be found) Get out and get into it. Terry O’Halloran BSO Prez and emailer |
