Default BSO Update

TH 4/2/2009

Greetings Blues Fans,

I need to apologize for omitting the date that Bonnie Raitt and Taj Majal will play Stir Concert Cove in last week’s email. Made me realize people do read these emails:-)
Their show is set for Friday, 8/28/09. They will play sets with their own bands, and play together. I was lucky enough to see them do the same thing years ago when The Legendary Blues Cruise sailed to the St. Croix Blues Fest. The late great Charles Brown was on that bill, as was Chubby Carrier. My friend in St. Croix told me there was a photo of me dancing in a conga line on the front page of the St. Croix paper the next dayJ

Follow this link for your chance to win a season pass for two from CD105.9 (How cool would that be?)

CD105 also has some great video of Playing with Fire on their site. Be sure to scroll down, there is a bunch: http://www.cd1059.com/PhotosVideos/2008PLAYINGWITHFIREPICTURESVIDEO/tabid/5146/Default.aspx

Friends sent me some really cool videos this week:
Muddy Waters with The Stones:

This video montage of people all over the globe singing “Stand by Me” was sent by Blues Notes Editor and big-time music supporter Terry Sedivy. It should put a smile on your face: http://vimeo.com/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=2539741

Santana is going to play throughout May and June and August and September at The Joint at The Hard Rock in Vegas. The Joint is a great venue and I see flights are only $135 RT right now (travel Tue, Wed and Sat). How can you resist? You can buy preferred seating for the next couple of days here: http://view.exacttarget.com/?j=febb11787c640275&m=fef71d71766d06&ls=fe2d167677 67067b7d1071&l=fef8177676660d&s=fe2617747361057873 1c73&jb=ffcf14&ju=fe8d10707c670d7970&r=0

The annual KIWR fm listener telethon is this Sunday, April 5th. Listeners of Pacific Street Blues will be asked to make donations to KIWR’s operating budget. For more than 15 years KIWR fm has supported the area’s roots music scene by actually playing blues, Americana and other genres of roots music. Once a year listeners are asked to help the station continue to provide quality programming by making a donation. Listeners of Pacific Street Blues have a long established record of making a strong showing of support. We are hopeful that even in this challenging economy Blues fans will continue to set the precedent of support for all the ‘spotlight programs’ on the station. Tune into 89.7 The River this Sunday morning and help Rick keep on keepin’ the Blues Alive!

"Want our fans to know, Playing with Fire has a hot new website. http://playingwithfireomaha.net/ has the most up-to-date information on the 2009 summer series, along with our final winter series show on April 25th, with Kenny 'Blues Boss' Wayne . Hear BSO is giving away several tickets to it's volunteers at the appreciation party, thanks for the support! BTY, if you click the 'Refresh' button, you'll get the websites' latest updates. We've got a killer line up for our 6th annual summer series! Make your plans. Come & join us. Choose the Blues! Best Regards, Jeff Davis"

As you all probably know, the River City Star has been retired to Bellevue where it is going to live out its days docked as a restaurant. One of the two replacement boats will be arriving any day, with the second boat coming a few weeks later. The new boats will hold less than half as many people, so we had to get creative to keep the Blues Cruise happening. Here is the scoop on the first cruise (mark your calendar for later cruises on Fri 8/7 and Sun 9/20):

BSO Blues Cruise #50
Sunday, 5/31/09
Boarding at 2:30pm
Cruising 3pm-4:30pm
Headliner: The Insomniacs
(This Portland band was nominated in 2008 for a Blues Music Award)

BSO Blues Cruise #51

I feel horrible that I forgot to plug Matt Cox’ CD Release Party last week at The Waiting Room. I hope some BSO’rs showed support. Matt’s schedule and a bunch of his music can be found here: http://www.myspace.com/crookedroadblues Really, really, really good!!!

I didn’t think I could appreciate Carolyn Wonderland any more than I already did, until I saw this video of her at a Houston City Council meeting. Be sure to watch the woman “signing” along with her for the hearing impaired. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rS_jndgs0zY
Carolyn plays Murphy’s matinee today (TH 4/2) at 6ish. BluesEd band, The Blues Wanderers, open the show at 5:30pm. Admission is $12. BJ Hutchemann sent this along: Carolyn took home 2 Austin Music Awards this year -- given out March 18 -- her performance w/ Suzanna Choffel & Ruthie Foster was the first musical act of the night and apparently brought the house down...see article below:

Wonderland put emphatic proof to her 2009 wins for Best Female Vocalist and Blues Artist >>
Music: 2008-09 Austin Music Awards Show - The Austin Chronicle

Brave Combo plays tonight (TH 4/2) at The Zoo Bar at 9pm. Applying the polka and world-music dance treatment to a most unlikely song lineup ("People Are Strange," "Sixteen Tons," "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida," "O Holy Night"), Brave Combo formed in the late '70s in Denton, TX.
Lash is quite excited that he can smoke while performing with The Mercurys Thursday 8pm-midnight at The Whiskey Roadhouse inside The Horseshoe Casino. You can catch the non-smoking Lash at McKenna’s on Friday night.

Lincoln Cow-Punkers, Forty Twenty, is apparently splitting up. Too bad, they were really entertaining. Their last show is Fri 4/3 at The Waiting Room. Black Squirrels and Gerald Lee w/ Josh Dunwoody open the show.

Two top-notch area bands play Barley St. on Friday: Son of 76 and the Watchmen from Lincoln, and Brad Hoshaw and the Seven Deadlies from Omaha . Excellent musicians performing well-written tunes.

Saturday night Johnny Winter plays the Whiskey Roadhouse inside the Horseshoe. Sarah Benck gets another well-deserved opening slot for a major artist. Ticket info is in her email above.
