| Wed 3/4/09 Greetings Blues Fans, We are now over 243 friends on BSO’s Facebook group!!! Follow the link below if you want to join our BSO Facebook group: http://www.facebook.com/n/?group.php&gid=54757108012 If you already joined, please consider using the “Invite Friends” feature to expand our reach! The BSO Volunteer Appreciation Party is Wednesday, March 25th at Walter Trout’s Show at The Whiskey Roadhouse, inside The Horseshoe Casino. RSVP to Vanessa at BSOVolunteers@cox.net if you volunteered in 2008. We have a free ticket for you, and we need to know if you are going to use it. If you need to buy tickets to the Walter Trout show, Tickets can be purchased at the Horseshoe gift shop, 888-512-SHOW or www.frontgatetickets.com. Cowboy Larry and Mack Bray both emailed me this video of some gray-hairs doing The Who’s “My Generation”. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zqfFrCUrEbY I don’t know how many of you took advantage of Clapton’s presale, but I am glad I did. I spaced buying tickets until 1pm on Saturday, 3 hours after they went on-sale. Luckily, by being a fan club member, I was still able to get 22nd row. I think it was worth the extra $7.50 per ticket. A friend mentioned to me the other day that they could see 25 shows at Murphy’s for the price of a Clapton ticket. Well, when you put it that way, maybe it wasn’t such a good deal. Here is a pretty good article one writer’s frustration with Ticketmaster: http://www.pollstar.com/blogs/news/archive/2009/03/02/651786.aspx (You will notice that is from Pollstar, my favorite site for searching out music when I am planning a vacation. I recently used it on a trip to New Orleans to see Eric Lindell at The Rockin’ Bowl. The owner got on-stage and said “This band is too good to play here!” I may have to steal that lineJ I was pleasantly surprised to see to familiar faces playing Sax for Lindell: Jimmy Carpenter from Jimmy Thackery’s band and Derek Huston, formerly of The Iguanas. Look for Eric Lindell at The Omaha Summer Arts Festival on June 26th. I saw it on Pollstar.comJ) Beginning Thursday, March 12th, the Thursday night blues jam will be moving back to the "Pheasant Tavern" on 139th and S Plaza. The Pheasant hosted the jam for years up to about five years ago and is very excited to bring it back. Nebraska Brewing Company ( 72nd St. and HWY 370) is starting to do live music on Tuesdays (and they brew excellent beer): 3/10 Happy Together (60’s Rock, Blues, Pop) 3/17 9/10s. Back for St. Patty's Day and all of that Farrell's Irish Red Ale! They packed the place last time - 3/24 Shawn Distephano & Sean McMahon (Rock, Pop), Also splitting the night will be Joshua Hoyer (Son of 76) This doesn’t have anything to do with The Blues, but since 105.9 does do a lot to promote Playing with Fire, and they play the most Blues music of any station in town, and the fact that this hits our demo, I thought I would pass on this PSA: Good Morning Everyone, I am sending this out to not only my closest friends, family, relatives, and co-workers but also to some local news media outlets so they are aware of what is happening, if they aren't already. I will be live on the radio at around 7:00 A.M. Central Time on Monday March 9, 2009 for the Bottoms Up radio broadcast dedicated to colon cancer awareness on CD 105.9. The whole program will air from 5:30-9 a.m. This year's live remote location will be at Baker's at 120th and Center. Please spread the word and encourage people to listen in that morning or even drop by to pick up their free FOBT kit. Also while you're there at Baker's that morning, tell Steve King thanks for partnering with the American Cancer Society again this year to help make people aware of colon cancer. This is also part of National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. You can also participate by dressing in blue on Friday March 6 by raising awareness to this nasty disease. If you are not in the immediate listening area of CD 105.9's signal, or if you'll be at work and don't have a radio there, you can listen live on the internet on their website at www.cd1059.com. Please mark this on your calendars for 7:00 A.M. Central Time on Monday March 9. And there should prove to be, from what I've heard, quite a bit of media coverage from all sources during the month of March. For those of you who may not be aware, I was diagnosed with Stage 3 colon cancer on September 24, 2008 and am currently undergoing chemotherapy treatments. I also want to say that having a colonoscopy procedure done saved my life and that is why I'm now a srong advocate of having that done. Please forward this onto anyone else who might be interested in this cause. Sincerely, Brad Golden Colon Cancer Survivor and Colonoscopy Promoter Have You Scheduled Your Colonoscopy Yet? I have just discovered a couple more cool websites. Music fan Deb Holst turned me onto another cool site that plays Omaha Bands only: www.kindair.org Also a bunch of cool stuff on www.NPR.org including Leonard Cohen, Susan Tedeschi, Blind Boys of Alabama, and The Hacienda Brothers. The Hacienda Brothers Interview was originally recorded in Dec. of 2006, and then played again in May of 2008 after the passing of Chris Gafney. Here is the link for that interview: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=90510533 Dave Gonzalez, founding member and guitarist for the Hacienda Brothers and The Paladins, plays BarFly tonight (Wed 3/4 at 8pm) with his new band, The Stone River Boys, (admission is $8 at the door). Be warned, this is Americana and Honky Tonk, which is certainly a cousin of the Blues, but not Blues. Here is a cool old video of The Paladins from 1986: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RlAPWDASjWQ (Catch Dave Gonzalez and The Stone River Boys March 12-14 at The Zoo Bar. Again, advance tickets are recommended.) This show slipped by my radar: Dear Zoo Fans, We are pleased to have Gina Sicilia make her Zoo Bar debut tonight at 6pm. You can check her out at Gina Sicilia - Home. Also, dont forget to get your tickets for Fridays LilEd/Bel-Airs extravaganza! Hope to See You Soon, The Zoo Bar Lil Ed and The Blues Imperials return to Linoma for shows TH at Murphy’s Matinee and Fri and Sat at The Zoo Bar. I finally found one of Ed’s performances on Conan O’Brien on the net (most sites had pulled it due to copyright infringement). Enjoy: http://www.highway61radio.com/?p=1353 It is pretty funny. Admission to see the band that The Boston Globe called “The World’s # 1 House-Rocking Blues Band are $10 at Murphy’s. Kris Lager Band has the late slot at Murphy’s Thursday. Admission drops to $5 at 7pm. The Zoo Bar is packed every time Lil Ed performs there. What do you think is going to happen Friday night when The Bel Airs are also on the bill? I’d say you would be a fool not to get advanced tickets for what should be the party of the year. http://www.etix.com/ticket/servlet/onlineSearch;jsessionid=F989D443B11A703B8C3D38DCD3 252D77?action=displayPerformance&pageNumber=0&page Size=10&searchType=null&queryString=action%3dsimpl eSearch%26searchTerm%3dzoo%2bbar%26searchBy%3dVENU E Bel Airs return Saturday night to the Zoo Bar. Friday at Murphy’s at 9pm is an Acoustic Music Showcase featuring Cas Haley and Josh Heinrichs ($6 at the door). Heinrichs is the founder and frontman for the hugely popular Jah Roots. Haley plays with Dallas ’ Woodbelly and was the Runner-Up on America ’s Got Talent. If you dig Reggae, or even just dig acoustic music, this show is not to be missed. Haley plays everything from Elvis to Stevie Wonder to Sting. Here is a little compilation of him on America ’s Got Talent: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2kwHxo38yv8 From: Steve Sherman, Louisville Art Gallery “This Sunday afternoon, March 8th, at 2PM, is the first of what I hope will become a regular event at the Louisville Art Gallery . I am a huge music lover and am so glad to be able to present some of the areas finest talent in what should be a fantastic afternoon of live music. Tim Koehn, Neil Johnsen, Doug Kouney, Kelsey Harrell, Jimmy Weber, Michael Campbell, Andrew Bailie, April Domet and Nate Bray will take turns performing their original compositions. Music genres from blues, jazz, country and who knows what else will be represented, so there should be something for everyone.” Debbie Davies does The Linoma Blues Matinee Double-Header with early shows next Wed at The Zoo Bar and Thursday at Murphy’s Lounge. The Mercurys follow Davies Thursday at Murphy’s. Get out and get into it. Terry O’Halloran BSO Prez and emailer |
