Default PWF 2009 and more!

Wed 2/24/09

Greetings Blues Fans,

You might want to check the BSO Calendar on BluesGroup.com. New show dates for Mike Zito, Carolyn Wonderland, Ray Drew, and Ron E Beck.

BJ announced in the Reader last week that “Playing With Fire founder/promoter Jeff Davis has some summer series bookings confirmed. Fiery and soulful Canadian vocalist Angel Forrest plays June 13, Tommy Castro’s funky blues-rock show is set for July 18, and show-stopping Bettye LaVette returns Sept. 12. LaVette nearly blew the roof of the Holland Center with the dramatic power of her sold out show last Saturday, Feb. 14.

Davis plans to rock things with the August show, he’s confirmed the Edgar Winter Band for the Aug. 15 date. Watch playingwithfireomaha.com for updates.”

Pre-Sale Info for Eric Clapton w/ Steve Winwood at The Qwest Center on Saturday, June 20th. Join Clapton’s fanclub at http://www.ecaccess.cc/login for $30 and you can buy (4) seats that are set aside for fanclub members. Seems like $7.50 per seat would be worth it to me:
  • As a member of EC Access, you will have the opportunity to purchase up to 4 Premium Reserved seats that have been set aside specifically for fan club members during the Ticketmaster on-sales.
Here is how to participate in the Ticketmaster EC ACCESS PREMIUM RESERVED Seating On-Sale:
Sign in to your EC Access account and visit the "TOURS" section of the site.
On the “TOURS” page you will find a unique “Ticketmaster Access Code” for your use during the first forty-eight (48) hours of the public on-sale.
This code can be redeemed during the Ticketmaster purchase process in order to gain access to the premium reserved seating set aside for members.
Please note that the Ticketmaster code provided on the TOURS page can be used once per event for up to four tickets (4) for all Ticketmaster shows. 4 TICKETS PER MEMBER for ENTIRE TICKETMASTER TOUR LISTING NOT 4 TICKETS PER SHOW
On-Sale date for Omaha is 2/28 at 10AM Local Venue Time

Lots of choices for Fat Tuesday on 2/24. Rockin’ Jake, five-time winner of “Best Harmonica player in New Orleans ”, brings his band to Murphy’s for a 5:30pm show complete with Beads and $4.00 Hurricanes. ($8 Cover) Get a taste of his musical gumbo here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9oP38CB6Wro&feature=related

The Zoo Bar has a great double-bill of local bands with The Tijuana Gigolos at 6pm, followed by Electric Soul Method at 9pm.

Wildfire will play acoustic at the Nifty Bar in East Benson. I want to see this Blues and Country band comprised of Sue Murray, Joe McCarthy (Little Joe), Jimmy Ray Pearce, and Carlos Figueroa. Sounds solid to me.

Omaha’s premier acoustic act, Acoustic Groove, will be at The Ozone and Blind Dog Fulton plays Dinker’s Bar.

Get out and celebrate Fat Tuesday, which has become a huge bar night in recent years.

Laissez Les Bons Temps Rouler! Let The Good Times Roll!

Thursday, 2/26, one of our new favorites return to Murphy’s Matinee: The Nace Brothers. As I recall, the new guy in the band has only been with them for 15 years! They play a great mix of originals and covers, including a fine version of The Band’s “The Weight”: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fd6fGvTobXw&feature=PlayList&p=7BF621BEE0E B7DC9&index=7
Admission is just $8, showtime 5:30pm.
The Jerry Pranksters will follow the Nace Brothers at 9:30pm. The Pranksters are an excellent Grateful Dead Tribute Band from Lincoln . Admission drops to $5 at 7pm.

Omaha ’s fine traditional Blues Band, 112 North Duck, heads down to the friendly confines of the Zoo Bar in Lincoln on Friday.

Swampboy writes:

Burgundy and Grey play Big Mama’s Kitchen on Saturday at 6pm. It isn’t very often you can listen to Blues while enjoying authentic Soul Food in Omaha . http://www.bigmamaskitchen.com/

The OK Sisters play McKenna’s on Saturday night and Fork in the Road plays Downtown Blues. Both excellent bands from just outside Omaha .

Emily over at The Horseshoe Casino wanted to be sure everyone knows about their big shows coming up: Derek Trucks 2/28, Walter Trout 3/25 and Johnny Winter 4/4 at Whiskey Roadhouse. Tickets can be purchased at the Horseshoe gift shop, 888-512-SHOW or www.frontgatetickets.com.

Hopefully you know all about Derek Trucks, but either way, here is a cool article on the child prodigy turned world-class slide player: http://www.popmatters.com/pm/article/derek-trucks-on-playing-with-allman-clapton-dylan
BTW, incredible live performer with a great band. Go see this show!

Dean and Gary ’s ultra-cool Sunday Roadhouse had to find a new home when Mick’s closed. I was more than a little thrilled when they offered me the opportunity to help them showcase their American series at Murphy’s. Their first show at Murphy’s will be Jesse Dayton this Sunday March 1st. Doors will open at 4pm with a 5pm showtime. Tix are $13 in advance at Murphy’s, or $15 day of show. Although Dayton is definitely closer to Honky-Tonk than he is The Blues, here is cool video of him singing “Bartender’s Blues”: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2l7PL24KgzI&feature=related

I’ll be heading from Murphy’s to BarFly for my first glimpse of the talented Matt Cox performing with his full band. I’m hearing great things. Double Shot opens for Cox’ Band at 9pm. Admission is $5.

I just realized I have hired 12 bands between Feb 24 and March 6th. I hope you folks are in the mood to hear some musicJ This is getting long, so I will just give you early warning that Dave Gonzalez and The Stone River Boys play BarFly on Wed 3/4, Lil Ed and Kris Lager both play Murphy’s on TH 3/5, and we have an Acoustic Reggae Showcase at Murphy’s on Friday, 3/6 with Cas Haley, the runner-up on America’s Got Talent, and Josh Heinrichs from Jah Roots.
