Wed 2/4/09

Greetings Blues Fans,

Here are some cool videos starting with the late, great Sean Costello, plus videos of Joe Bonamassa and Derek Trucks, both at the age of 12 (Trucks plays the Horseshoe on 2/28): http://www.illinoisblues.com/cdsandmore/videos4.htm#seanc

The Iguanas, featuring local boy Joe Cabral, were honored with not one, but two prestigious “Best of the Beat” awards in New Orleans on Saturday. At a special gala at Harrah’s Theater in New Orleans , The Iguanas were presented with awards for “Best Country/Folk/Roots Rock Band” and “Best Country/Folk/Roots Rock Album of 2008.”

We are still in need of sponsors for Playing with Fire. If anyone has any leads on sponsorship for 2009, now is the time to act. Please send me an email and I will get it to Jeff Davis, our fearless leader of PWF.

Tonight Wed 2/4, Theresa Anderson is on Conan O’Brien. She is a Basin Street Records Label-mate of one of my faves, Jon Cleary: Theresa Andersson on MySpace Music - Free Streaming MP3s, Pictures & Music Downloads

The Blues Society sponsored the big North Mississippi All-Stars concert at Slowdown tonight, Wednesday 2/4. There should be at least 100 Blues Society members in attendance, since we sold out of our ticket allotment. We will have a booth right inside the door, where we will be enticing people to join BSO. Join tonight at the All-Stars concert and receive tickets to (4) upcoming shows. Check out The N. MS. All-Stars entertaining the masses at Bonnaroo in 2007: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6DwQmCws97Q&feature=related

Moreland and Arbuckle will be playing a very similar style of Blues at 6pm at The Zoo Bar on Wed 2/4 and at Murphy’s Matinee on TH 2/5 (admission $8 at Murphy’s). Check out the Cigar Box Guitar: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jY8YfreXG5g&feature=related

Son of 76 and the Watchmen play Barley Street on Thursday night. Big talent in a small bar!

I strongly suggest our Lincoln friends check out Lizard King, the excellent Doors Tribute Band, that plays the Zoo this Friday and Saturday night.

Got this from Swamboy:
Greetings,
Last Friday I attended a Jam hosted by " Burgundy and Gray"(Mel-Tone, Hector Anchondo, and Gayland Prince) at the American Legion on 24th and Parker. $5.00 cover included homemade soul food and some really good blues and R&B. This is planned as a weekly event. I found the club friendly and accomodating and encourage all to support the blues in North Omaha . 8:00PM-Midnight on Fridays.
We really are one,
Tim Koehn (Swampboy Blues Band)

Friday, June 13th, The Blues Society is sponsoring Jason Ricci’s show at The Depot in Shenandoah , IA. If any BSO members are planning to attend, drop me an email. I might need you to be our ambassador at the show. Should be quite a show: http://www.myspace.com/jasonricciandnewblood
The Blues Ed's "Intern Group" call themselves Bleeding Blue, and they're playing a matinée on Friday, February 13, from 5:00 to 7:00 at Louis Bar , 5702 NW Radial Hwy in Omaha 's Benson neighborhood.

The next Playing with Fire Winter Series Concert at The Holland Center is Bettye LaVette on Valentine’s Day, February 14th. Some viewer referred to her as the “Female James Brown” after watching this video:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JFpFxB4Wqcg

Here is an interesting interview of Ms. LaVette: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=djuQJDlGpbk&feature=related

Mark your calendar for a Fat Tuesday Party at Murphy’s on 2/24. Rockin’ Jake, five-time winner of Best Harmonica player in New Orleans , will make this a Fat Tuesday to remember!!!

Emily over at The Horseshoe Casino wanted to be sure everyone knows about their big shows coming up: Derek Trucks 2/28, Walter Trout 3/25 and Johnny Winter 4/4 at Whiskey Roadhouse. The last two do not go on sale until 2/7. Tickets can be purchased at the Horseshoe gift shop, 888-512-SHOW or www.frontgatetickets.com.

The 2008 Blues Society Volunteer Appreciation Party will Wednesday, March 25th at Walter Trout’s Show at The Whiskey Roadhouse. We will soon be contacting all 2008 BSO Volunteers to offer them a complimentary ticket. (Thanks to everyone that kept the Blues alive last year!)

If you want to subscribe, or unsubscribe, to this FREE weekly Blues e-mail, follow this link to the Blues Society of Omaha's website and follow the simple prompts: http://omahablues.com/index.php?page=mailinglist

(That is where the following calendar lives)

There are several bands that have not played for us in quite a while that were just listed on the calendar: Ray Drew, Chris Duarte, Hadden Sayers, Randy McAllister, and more.

Get out and get into it.
