Super Volunteer Jack Spencer is off another of Roger Nabor’s Legendary Blues Cruises. There are some excellent reviews of the cruise in this week’s Blueswax, read both 434 and 435: http://www.visnat.com/entertainment/music/blueswax/issuearchive.cfm

Our friends from KC MO , Trampled Under Foot, received the following praise in that review for their performance on the cruise:
But down in the small, usually acoustic Queen's Lounge, the seats were already filling up for the 8:45 performance by Trampled Under Foot. The Schnebelen family clearly ruled the buzz on the ship and everyone wanted to see them. By the time they started the room was packed, by the time they finished the crowd went down the hallway outside. And TUF didn't disappoint as they worked through their set with huge smiles led by Danielle's killer voice. She is clearly one of the great new voices of the Blues offering a sound truly reminiscent of the great female Blues belters, especially Janis Joplin. This show was cited by several cruisers as the best so far.

I hope everyone is checking out Rick Galusha’s podcast of Pacific Street Blues. The show airs on Sundays on 89.7 The River on Sunday mornings from 9am-noon, right in the middle of my REM sleep! But I never miss show, now that he is podcasting. Here is the podcast: Pacific Street Blues & much much more
(Rick’s review of Ian Moore’s CD as his CD of the Year can be found in the above Blueswax issue)

Blues In the Afternoon will move to a new time on Mondays and expand to two hours beginning Monday February 2nd on KIOS FM 91.5. The show will run from 1:00PM until 3:00PM.

  • Rick Estrin New DVD: Blues harp maestro RickEstrin has produced a DVD titled Rick Estrin Reveals Secrets, Subtleties, And Tricks Of Blues Harmonica. Rick lovingly shares some great blues harmonica tips and demonstrates them with great performances backed by guitarist Rusty Zinn. Rick also interjects his wonderful humor with a series of comedy skits that run throughout the DVD parallel to his harp pointers. This DVD is an absolute harmonica player's delight. It's available at www.filmbaby.com, and soon to be available at www.rickestrin.com. To read more about this DVD, see a sample clip, and to order, click here.
If you join the Blues Society at Murphy’s in January you will receive (2) Complimentary Tickets to the Moreland & Arbuckle scheduled there for 2/4/09.

Jeff Davis has informed me that we need to find more sponsors for Playing with Fire, or it will not be happening in 2009. It is disheartening to me, and it must be even more so to Jeff, that Omaha is not stepping forward to support this amazing event. If anyone has any leads on sponsorship for 2009, now is the time to act. If you have any leads on sponsorship, please send me an email and I will get it to Jeff.

How about some good news? ValPak, those folks that mail you the envelope full of coupons, sent me this:
As of yesterday, the Unemployment Rate in Nebraska was 3.7% This is low compared to Michigan at 9.6%, California is 8.4%, Florida is 7.3%, Missouri is 6.7%, Kansas is 4.9% and Iowa is higher than ours at 4.3%. Home Foreclosures are very low in Nebraska as well at 1.55% this compares to Florida at 7.32% and Iowa at 2.03%. Now look at this...The Nebraska State Budget Deficit is Zero, Nada, Nothing. California has a budget deficit of over 13.8 Billion Dollars, Florida is at 2.3 Billion, Colorado has a deficit of $604 Million, Missouri is $342 Million, Kansas is $141 Million and Iowa an even deficit of $100 Million dollars.
Bottom line is this. In Nebraska we are not in the same gloom and doom position as much of the country. Do yourself a favor and turn off or at least turn away from the gloom and doom on CNN and FOX and maybe even your local news. We are very lucky to be here in Nebraska . Our economy is strong and people are buying! Check out this information on CNNMoney.com here is the link:
CNN Money Map .

I would suggest you celebrate with a few cold ones and some live Blues:

If you got tix to the sold-out Kevin Costner and Modern West show at Slowdown TH, check out Teddy Morgan on guitar. Teddy played The 18th Amendment back in the day. He has song-writing and production credits on Costner’s CD. Should be a cool night of Americana .

Jared & the Blues Teachers are playing in February:

EVERY THURSDAY at the Grant Street Bar, 90th & GrantSt. It's an EARLY show, 7 - 10 p.m. Three sets of electric country-blues with a feelin'! No cover charge, food & drink specials. We are scheduled to be at the Grant Street all year, weather permitting! Come on down and get your Thursday Blues Party On!

SUNDAY, Feb. 15 Rusty Rooster Saloon in Yutan , Nebraska .
5pm - 9pm. This should be the blues event of the year in Yutan. Yutan knows how to party and get that good time feelin' of the blues! It's worth the drive to party at the Rusty Rooster Saloon. No cover, EARLY show 5 - 9pm.

Tonight’s artist at Murphy’s Matinee is Hamilton Loomis (showtime 5:30pm, $8 cover at the door).
If you like your blues funky and danceable, this is the show for you.
There are a bunch of great videos of Ham on youtube, but this commercial he shot for Ford may be the most interesting: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=swC87NaBu0c

Australian Bluesman Harper plays the Zoo Bar on Friday night and The Bel Airs are the tba there on Saturday night.

Young Lincoln Blues-Rock Guitar-Slinger Levi William has a rare Omaha appearance with a show Saturday night at McKenna’s.

Devon Fulton wrote: Please come out to Papa Joe's in Missouri Valley Saturday (1/31/09) night for some great high energy blues and party tunes. Blind Dog Fulton will start at 9pm. Also, please check out our new myspace page at www.myspace.com/blinddogfultonband ..... We have some tunes for you to listen to there and some pics of the crazy folks in Nehawka from 1/17/09.

The Blues Orchestra @ Ole Dad's GRAND OPENING ! (formerly L&R Bar and Grill) Tecumseh

BluesEd groups If All Else Fails (electric band) and Fill in the Blank (acoustic trio who opened at November's 1200 Club with Sonny Landreth) will be playing at The Nebraska Brewing Company on 2/3/09. It is a Tuesday night and the acoustic trio will be playing during the dinner hour and will switch over to the full band afterwards. The venue is at 72nd & Hwy 370 in Shadow Lake Towne Center

The Blues Society sponsored the big North Mississippi All-Stars concert at Slowdown coming up next Wednesday 2/4. There should be at least 100 Blues Society members in attendance, since we sold out of our ticket allotment. We will have a booth right inside the door, where we will be enticing people to join BSO. Check N MS All-Stars out at Bonnaroo in 2007: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6DwQmCws97Q&feature=related

Moreland and Arbuckle will be playing a very similar style of Blues at 6pm at The Zoo Bar that same night. You could probably catch a couple of hours of both if you had a mind to travel.

The next Playing with Fire Winter Series Concert at The Holland Center is Bettye LaVette on Valentine’s Day, February 14th. Here is an awesome performance from her from back in the days of Black and White TV: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wYONs2hR2YQ

Emily over at The Horseshoe Casino wanted to be sure everyone knows about their big shows coming up: Derek Trucks 2/28, Walter Trout 3/25 and Johnny Winter 4/4 at Whiskey Roadhouse. The last two do not go on sale until 2/7. Tickets can be purchased at the Horseshoe gift shop, 888-512-SHOW or www.frontgatetickets.com.

I hope someone reads this, because I am losing an awful lot of sleep writing it.

Get out and get into it.
