Default Weekly Update

Happy Holidays Blues Fans,

Here is a free download (or you can just listen to it) from Monica DuPont, who has been described as “singing like Muddy Waters and looking like Mary Tyler Moore”. Got my interest too:

Lovely weather, isn’t it? How does a little trip to Jazzfest in New Orleans sound. They just announced their line-up for April Fest, it is incredible as always: http://www.nojazzfest.com/index.php?http%3A//www.nojazzfest.com/music/

Blues Society of Omaha V.P. Ric Cowger wrote that he will have "Out-of Print" BSO shirts available at Murphy’s Matinee for just $10.00 on Thursday. He also wanted me to remind you that BSO memberships are always available at Murphy’s and that they make great X-mas gifts.

Speaking of which, we have an unprecedented deal for anyone looking to join the Blues Society, or to buy a gift membership for someone: Buy any level BSO Membership at Murphy’s, and get two tickets to the upcoming North Mississippi All-Stars concert ABSOLUTELY FREE.

If you have not checked out the million-dollar+ Slowdown, this is the show for a Blues fan. Listen to N. MS All-Stars here: http://www.myspace.com/nmallstars

The Blues Foundation just announced their nominees for The Blues Music Awards (fka The WC Handy Awards).
I am proud to say we have hired 80% of the nominees this year.

Congrats to Magic Slim and The Teardrops for being nominated in the “Best Band” category. The Teardrops will be our first band at Murphy’s in 2008, playing with his touring band, The Teardrops, on January 8th. Slim will also be performing with Bad Moon Rising, his Lincoln band, at The Zoo Bar on December 25 and 26. Go see a living legend in a legendary music club.

Speaking of music clubs, you probably read that Mick’s Music Bar is closing and their last night is NY Eve. Read the OWH article herehttp://omaha.com/index.php?u_page=2620&u_sid=10515978)
Michael Campbell built a great acoustic room and consistently booked excellent shows at Mick's. It was just Voted Best Music Club in Omaha by KETV and was a repeat winner of The Reader’s Choice Awards. Unfortunately, it comes as a surprise to very few that the concept of a full-time music bar did not make enough money to continue operating.

Michael indicated to me that he does not regret the venture, but is glad to have it sold. If you are like me, you probably feel a little guilty that you didn’t support it more. Hopefully, we will both get there to catch a show or two before the end of the year. Check out his schedule and get on over to Mick’s and thank Michael and his crew for bringing something very cool to Omaha : http://www.micksomaha.com/index.php
Coles Whalen on Saturday 12/20 would definitely appeal to fans of Sheryl Crow. http://www.coleswhalen.com/

Rick Galusha writes:
After a successful 20th Anniversary show, where we raised more than $3,400 for Native Kids on the Pine Ridge Reservation, I’ve finally had time to post some more shows. So click the link and soak up some tunes and have a very cool Yule for me if you please!
As always, thanks for listening!
Rick

We will be raffling off some leftover CDs that were donated by some Blues labels, tonight at Murphy’s. Proceeds will also go to Lash’s Toy Drive .

I am bummed that the weather may limit the audience for Scottie Miller tonight at Murphy’s 5:30pm Matinee. I was really hoping to get him some more exposure to build his following here. If you dig Dr. John’s style of New Orleans Funk and Boogie, you would love this cat. (I will send out an email later today if Scottie has to cancel, but as of this morning, it is on). I love this act. Admission is just $8.

This note is from The Confidentials:
The 5th Annual Confidentials Christmas Concert will be held Saturday, December 20th at 7:00 PM at Witherspoon Hall (inside Joslyn Museum ). Tickets are $12.50 for adults and $7.50 for students. Children under 6 are free.
Proceeds from the concert will benefit the Omaha Street School and the Omaha School of Music. Everyone is watching their dollars these days, but without support, both of these fantastic organizations would not exist. Both organizations help underprivileged and troubled youths stay off the streets and gives them a second chance.
Please, if you have a moment, please forward this message on to your friends and family who may not be on the mailing list. Let's get the word out to our local community that these organizations could use our support!
For ticket information, please call 402.738.9225 or 402.451.5234 x151. E-mail requests can be sent to confidentialschristmas@hotmail.com.

We have a great double-bill Sunday at BarFly’s Blue Christmas Party. The Bel Airs will play at 7pm, followed by the Kris Lager Band at 10pm. There will be a special $.25 drink menu from 6:30pm-7:30pm to toast the holidays. Admission is $8 until 9pm, then it drops to $5. By now, I imagine all of you have seen the fabulous Bel Airs, so this video will be typical great live Bel Airs. Enjoy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gwcq6PsJqWs&feature=related

Tickets for The BSO NY Eve Bash are now available online:
http://omahablues.com/index.php?page=nyevepartytix
They are also on-sale at Murphy's Lounge and I will be sure to have some available Sunday at BarFly’s Blue Christmas, along with North Mississippi All-Stars Tickets.

The Mighty Jailbreakers will be reuniting for this year's party. Opening the show at 8:15pm will be Elwin James and The Way-Outs, a really strong veteran Blues Trio from Omaha . (Elwin was the guitarist with The Grateful Dudes). Tickets are $15 in advance and $17.50 day of show. Negotiations are still underway for a shuttle and after-party at a near-by hotel.

If you want to subscribe, or unsubscribe, to this FREE weekly Blues e-mail, follow this link to the Blues Society of Omaha's website and follow the simple prompts: http://omahablues.com/index.php?page=mailinglist

You can renew your membership at that site, but you have to renew at Murphy's to get the free pair of N. MS. All-Stars Tix. (Green memberships are now available and make great Holiday Gifts!!!)

Get out and get into it.

Ho Ho Ho
