Good news on Candye Kane’s health:

2008 National Blues Foundation Award Nominee, Songwriter, Activist and Diva Candye Kane embarks on her first Northwest Tour since her bout with pancreatic cancer!

Kane underwent surgery on April 18, 2008 at UCSD Thornton Hospital for a neuroendocrine tumor on her pancreas. The procedure, called “The Whipple” is the same procedure that Apple Founder Steve Jobs underwent several years ago. Benefits were held for Kane worldwide, since like many musicians, she found herself without health insurance as she faced a major crisis. Billy Jo Shaver, Willie and Connie Nelson, Tommy Castro, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Dave Alvin, Publisher Bernard Taschen and Healer and Author Louise Hay were just some of hundreds of people who rallied to Candye’s side during her struggle.

Kane has since lost 100 pounds and found a new lease on life. Her uplifting show has taken on an even more inspirational quality as she walks us through the songs that kept her going thru her darkest moments. Her band features her eldest son, Evan on drums as well as 26 year old guitar virtuoso and Mountainview resident Laura Chavez.

Her latest release Guitar’d and Feathered (RUF records) was her eighth cd, and earned her a West Coast songwriting award and a Rainbow music award. It was co - produced by former Muddy Waters guitarist, Bob Margolin. She will enter the studio again in early February to collaborate on a new cd with East Coast guitarist Popa Chubby.

Kane has also written a Memoir entitled The Toughest Girl Alive. It has been adapted to the stage by San Diego Ballet head, Javier Velasco and will debut at the Diversionary Theater in San Diego at the end of January.

Lash LaRue’s Toy Drive for the Children of The Pine Ridge Reservation was a huge success at all three venues last weekend. Mike Morgan and Jim Suhler and their band put on a dynamite show at BarFly, as did The Loose Brothers and The Side Effects. It was quite a good time indeed. (The Jerry Pranksters were fab also)

If you would still like to contribute to The Toy Drive , there are three more opportunities:

Cookies for Pine Ridge Indian Reservation Christmas Party

We are looking for volunteers who love to bake! As part of Lash LaRue’s Annual Toy Drive for the kids of the Pine Ridge Reservation, we are looking for donations of homemade cookies that could be served as refreshments for the Christmas Party and toy distribution on December 20th.
Estimate the number of attendees is 400, so would need a minimum of 35 dozen cookies. If we can get at least 7 volunteer bakers who would be willing to make 5 dozen cookies, that would meet the minimum needs.
We will gratefully accept less cookies, however it will be more of a challenge to get them all picked up since there will be more pickup sites.
The Cookies will need to be ready for pickup by (Wednesday, January 18), and packed up for transporting in a box or some type of container with a lid.
Please reply to me via email if you can contribute your time and effort to the cookie request. Let me now how many cookies you can provide, your phone number & address. I will call you on Monday the 15th or Tuesday the 16th to arrange for pickup up the cookies on the 17th or 18th.
Please forward this to anyone you think may be interested in helping out with Lash's cause. Thank you for taking the time and effort to make the Lash’s Christmas party special for the Pine Ridge kids!
If we receive an overwhelming response to the cookie request, and you would like to contribute, we would really appreciate fresh fruit (5 lb bags of apples or oranges etc.) for the grandparents!

This Sunday is Rick’s Galusha’s 20th Anniversary of PS Blues.
Serious congrats Rick!
You can hear him on 89.7 The River every Sunday morning from 9am-noon. If you can’t wait until Sunday, listen to a podcast now of his show from 11/30: http://kiwrblues.podomatic.com/ (He is starting to play some great Blues Christmas Music including a Blues Christmas duet album from Elvis and current stars).

So how does a guy celebrate 20 years of sacrificing his time for the listening pleasure of others? With a fundraiser for a great cause of course! Rick is getting started early this Sunday with a live fundraiser for Lash’s Toy Dirve from 8am-noon . This week’s show will feature live in-studio performances by several of Omaha ’s finest musicians, plus BSO Super-Vols BJ Hutchemann and Ric Cowger will be helping out on-air. I might have to set my alarm, or just stay up.

Liquid Courage Tattoo, located just N of 75th & Pacific, is again raffling off $1000 in free tattoos (1- $500 tattoo and 5- $100 tattoos). Just take an unwrapped toy to Liquid Courage and they'll give you a ticket. Winners will be announced during the radio show on the 14th.
Eddie “Devil Boy” Turner will make his Murphy’s Matinee debut tonight (12/11). Turner wowed everybody on the boat this summer with his “Psychedelic Blues-Rock”. If you like guitar, you will love Eddie Turner: http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&VideoID=42124 188
“This is a stunning album, and the dawn of a new musical force and presence. Turner’s forward-thinking music is blues-based, but it is ultra-modern and contains psychedelic rock. (and)will intoxicate the straightest of the sober. Without trying to attract a new audience, Turner will, undoubtedly, do just that.” - Blues Beat

“a strong, highly stylized release from an artist previously in the back-ground. The timing is right for Eddie Turner to make his stand. Turner peppers his music with equal parts rock, funk, and gospel, guided by a love of Hendrixian guitar.”
- Blues Revue

Saturday 12/13 at Lincoln ’s world-famous Zoo Bar is Bubba Hernandez y los Super Vatos.
After 20 1/2 years of national and international touring, one appearance on "The Simpsons", and two Grammy awards with the rocking polka band Brave Combo, Bubba Hernandez set out to see what else there is in the world of music performance. In January of 2005, he founded Los Super Vatos, which gained traction rather quickly and is currently performing its Cumbia Rockin' Tex-Mex R & B Grooves at showcase clubs and festivals around Texas and neighboring states.

The Rock 'n' Roll Rumble is back!! Sunday the 14th from 5-10pm, Zoo Bar!
