LEROI MOORE 1961-2008
We are deeply saddened that LeRoi Moore, saxophonist and founding member of
Dave Matthews Band, died unexpectedly Tuesday afternoon, August 19, 2008, at
Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center in Los Angeles from sudden
complications stemming from his June ATV accident on his farm near
Charlottesville, Virginia. LeRoi had recently returned to his Los Angeles
home to begin an intensive physical rehabilitation program.

These obituaries came from Bob Corritore’s email blast:
RIP Hosea Leavy 11/26/1927- 08/12/2008: Another great one is gone. Fresno , California blues singer and guitarist Hosea Leavy died on Monday, August 12, 2008 of liver cancer. He was 80 years old. Born in Altheimer , Arkansas , just outside of Little Rock , he learned blues guitar from his father, and played throughout Arkansas before venturing out west during the 1960s.
RIP Jerry Wexler 1/10/1917-8/15/2008: This just in from the San Francisco Chronicle: legendary record producer Jerry Wexler passed away today at the age of 91. Jerry's time at Atlantic Records included working with Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Ruth Brown, and others, and invented the term "Rhythm And Blues". To read the entire San Francisco Chronicle obituary, click here. Thank you, Jerry, for your lifelong contributions to R&B, and to the entire music industry.
RIP Phil Guy 4/28/1940-8/20/2008: This news form Steve Hecht of Piedmont Talent and Buddy Guy's Legends: Guitarist/vocalist Phil Guy, the younger brother of the legendary Buddy Guy, passed away today at St. JamesHospital in Olympia Fields, IL, after a battle with kidney and liver cancer. He was 68.

RIP Little Arthur Duncan 2/5/1934-8/20/2008: It is with great sadness that we report yet another passing in this terrible week of losses to our blues community. Chicago harmonica ace Little ArthurDuncan passed away Wednesday morning, August 20, 2008 at KindredHospital in Northlake , IL . He was 74.

I’ve said it several times before. Get out and see these musicians while you can. It may be yours, or it might be the musician’s last show.

A friend of mine is auctioning off a BB King Gibson Guitar signed by the king after his show in CB a few months ago. 70% of the proceeds go to Stand-Up for a Cure. If you have a few grand to spare, it would be pretty sweet to have and you would be helping a great cause: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270265650467&ru=http%3 A%2F%2Fsearch.ebay.com%3A80%2Fsearch%2Fsearch.dll% 3Ffrom%3DR40%26_trksid%3Dm37.l1313%26satitle%3D270 265650467%26category0%3D%26fvi%3D1

Is there anything better than Blues Saxophone? Murphy’s showcases Blues Music Award-winning Sax-man Eddie Shaw and the Wolfgang tonight at 5:30pm. Admission is an economic slowdown inspired $8.
When the blues resurgence was in full swing in the ‘60s and ‘70s, Eddie Shaw was in the eye of the hurricane. Shaw, a tenor sax stalwart, was right in the midst of some of the seminal blues recordings going down in a few Windy City studios. He played gigs with Hound Dog Taylor, Freddie King, Otis Rush, Earl Hooker, and Magic Sam. Shaw also arranged the tunes on The Howlin’ Wolf London Sessions (with Eric Clapton) and Muddy Waters’ Unk and Funk album. The Wolf Gang was the original back up band for the legendary Howlin’ Wolf and in 1972 Shaw became his person manager until Wolf’s untimely death in 1975.
That’s a resume that any blues musician would covet and we’re not even counting the greats Shaw played with in the early ‘50s before he hit Chicago , back in Greenville , Mississippi , such as Ike Turner, Little Milton Campbell and Willie Love. In the late ’50s, Shaw walked out of Muddy Waters’ band and walked down the street and onto the stage to accompany Chester "Howlin’ Wolf" Burnett. The bluesman kept room for Shaw in his band after hearing his rich tone, perfect fills, and tasteful solos. Considered to be one of the premier Chicago blues bands performing today, no one stands better positioned to bridge past and present than Eddie Shaw.
Junior Brown returns to our area for a concert at Whiskey Roadhouse tonight. If western swing, honky tonk, or electrified Bakersfield country is your thing, you will love this incredible guitarist.

Friday night at the Zoo Bar, catch Harper, the World Music/ Bluesman from Australia who is as adept on the Blues Harp as he is on the didgeridoo.

Michael Kelsey, the amazing guitarist/percussionist/looper returns to Mick’s Friday.

International Blues Challenge winners, Trampled Under Foot, return to Downtown Blues Friday. Definitely a cool band.

As posted here previously, Bonnie Raitt canceled her show that was scheduled at Stir on Saturday.

Coco Montoya plays BarFly Sunday at 7pm and The Zoo Bar on Monday at 9pm. Though he grew up as a drummer and was raised on rock & roll, Coco Montoya became an outstanding blues guitarist in the '90s after stints in the bands of Albert Collins and John Mayall. Montoya debuted as a leader in 1995 with the Blind Pig album Gotta Mind to Travel and garnered an award for Best New Blues Artist at the following year's Handy Awards ceremonies. Hopefully Lincoln guitarist/songwriter Dave Steen will join Coco for a few of Steen’s songs that Coco has recorded. Admission for Sunday’s show is $12.
