| Buckle up, strap yourself in real tight and hold on to what you got! The DamonFowler Group is in the house, so be forewarned: This riveting live recording will propel you on an American Roots music ride that will flat knock your socks off! The much anticipated third recording from the young Mr. Fowler captures his "Lightning in a Bottle" style and transfers the listener into a seat front row and center of a typical DFG live set. Two nights in the summer of 2003 at the now famous Skippers Smokehouse with an enthusiastic audience backdrop sets the stage for this rollicking 10-song masterpiece. A wide range of blues-based material is displayed here anddelivered impeccably by guitarist, singer and songwriter Damon Fowler. The methodical Chuck Riley on electric bass forms the strong backbone of the three-piece ensemble and last but not least, keeping time with relentless tenacity on drums for this recording is Don Stahl. Damons musical prowess and maturity shows up big time with four fine original songs randomly put in the mix with excellent interpretations on six blues standards that range from the great BB King and Blind Willie McTell, all the way back to the original Delta roadhouse bluesman himself - RobertJohnson. Right from the get-go the initial "Jig Is Up is an original Fowler tune that incorporates an infectious rumba rhythm with a strong back beat and burning guitar work that delivers the goods. The cover of Johnny Winters TV Mama and an original instrumental "Sweet Marmalade" spotlights the expertise slidework of Damon, which he continues to hone and master. BB Kings Ghetto Woman changes the tempo of the set and highlights both thesoulful vocals, and the technical guitar expertise of Fowler. One of the crowd favorites is Damons signature Rock-A-Billy Blues original; Riverview Drive, and in this energy driven live version, the three piece goes at it full throttle, then stops on a dime and makes a smooth transition into Pocket Full Of Blues a catchy original song you may remember from the DFG debut CD.The live version here turns the song up a notch and intensifies it. The group next pays tribute to the master Mr. Johnson with a rousing version of "Hot Tamales" including a very spicy lead guitar solo at no extra charge. Just a hint of the late great Duane Allman's slidework is the cream that rises to the top in the final two tunes: 28 Degrees (yet another original), and Blind WillieMcTell's: "Brokedown Engine" polishes off the night. Damon Fowler Group Live at Skipper's Smokehouse is indeed a milestone forthese blue-collar hard working musicians. In particular, Damon Fowler continues to evolve musically and is a work in progress. He cautiously takeshis successes in stride, remaining humble but confident in what he can accomplish. This fine recording showcases ten of those accomplishments. |
