Thursday, August 23, 2007 Greetings Blues fans, If you want to subscribe, or unsubscribe, to this free weekly Blues email, go here: http://omahablues.com/index.php?page=mailinglist No shortage of great music again this week (naturally). 2007 Blues Music Award nominee for Male Contemporary Blues Artist of the Year, Ronnie Baker Brooks, returns to Murphy's Lounge Thursday, August 23rd at 5:30pm. Admission is $10. The Boston Herald had this to say about RBB's latest CD: "Ferocious and unrelenting, 'The Torch' may be the year's best blues album..." Ronnie is bringing a special guest with him to his Omaha show: Jellybean Johnson. Johnson was the drummer in Morris Day and The Time, that I am sure you remember from Prince's movie Purple Rain. Johnson is also a monster guitar player. Here is an interview of Johnson. It is an interesting insight into the MPLS music scene in the 1980's: http://minnesotamusiccafe.com/toneReview.asp Etta James and her Roots Band play Stir on Friday night. Her version of "I'd rather go blind (than to see you walk away)", may be the finest Blues song ever recorded. Or how about her version of "At Last"? Here is a link to a video of one of her new songs. It might just become another classic: http://music.aol.com/video/beware/etta-james/1448579 Speaking of Etta, PWF Volunteer Larry Week won the pair of tickets to see Etta James. Thanks to everyone that volunteered Saturday. Y'all are the best. I mean that sincerely. After Etta, there are several fine club options Friday: McKenna's has New York 8-String guitarist Andy Schneider. Here is a really cool video of Schneider explaining and playing his 8 string "bass and guitar combo" instrument, ala Charlie Hunter: http://www.andyschneider.com/video.htm If you live out west, stop and see Blues House at the Manhattan Club Friday or Saturday. A great horn band. Luther Allison's old bandleader, James Solberg, plays the legendary Zoo Bar on Friday: "His raw, gutsy voice bleeds over the razor sharp guitar licks and pinpoint tight rhythms" - Songwriter's Monthly Linoma's coolest Blues act, The Kris Lager Band, returns to Omaha to play Downtown Blues on Friday night. BSO Members get in FREE!!! Saturday at Downtown Blues is their Summer Beach Bash with five bands including Eric Jerardi at 7:30pm Definitely a band to check out!!! You can hear four of his songs here: http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=947 01497 Downtown Blues is bringing in truckloads of sand for their beach bash, having a bikini contest, and doing a lot of promotion, so it should be a pretty big deal. They are looking for volunteers to help pour beer, or he may have some paying jobs as well. If you are interested, call Brian at 490-8988. Saturday night is also Dundee Days with The 5150's, The Mercurys, Linoma Mashers, and Rhythm Collective all playing outside. The OK Sisters play Saturday night at McKenna's. Sunday is the Jazzwholes last regular Sunday night gig at Bar Fly. Electric Soul Method will take over that slot beginning next Sunday. You have heard me sing the praises of Electric Soul Method in these emails before. Fri. 8/31Cruise Tickets are selling fast at McKenna's, Murphy's, Bar Fly, and The Lift. The headliner is Jimmy Thackery, but the other two bands are top-notch as well: The Mezcal Brothers and KC's Trampled Under Foot. Tix are $24 ea. and BSO members can buy a pair for $40. Get out and get into it. Terry O'Halloran BSO Prez and emailer Thu 8/23112 North Duck (07:30pm)........................................U pstream (170th & W.
